Many of you know I am a stay at home mom and get to “hang out” with my baby Atticus all day. He is 4 months now and I have learned so much in this time. Being a SAHM has so many rewards. Seeing him grow every little step of the way, how he learns new milestones everyday, seeing him smile and talk to you and how much that baby needs you and trusts you. It is also the hardest job I have ever had. The hardest decisions in my life have been made since being a mom and the strongest sense of guilt that I have ever felt. Self doubt every day, not knowing if I’m doing the right thing or if I’m not doing something and anxiety in the highest peak. Something that has helped me big time is sharing life and insight with other moms. Asking for advice and sharing stories. Giving each other motivation and encouragement along the way.
I was asked by lovely mama friend Hannah Renee to be a part of a collaboration to share more insight of into the life of a Stay at Home Mom. Me and a group of awesome mamas got to be part of this collaboration, sharing their day to day, feelings and what its life of a stay at mom. You can find the links to each wonderful mama’s post at the bottom!
1. Describe a typical day’s schedule.
To be honest, I don’t have a set schedule. It all depends at what time Atticus wakes up. It might be anywhere from 5am-7am. From there he eats every 3 hours, so that makes it a little bit easy to know when he’s gonna eat next. When he wakes up in the morning I feed him, change his diaper and he is awake for like 30-45 minutes and he goes back to sleep, along with mama! I am not a morning person, don’t judge! I mean, who gets up at 6 am, really? This is his first big nap of the day. We really get out of bed at his next feeding, probably around 9. From there mama tries to have some breakfast while baby is on the bouncer or swing. Through out the day we tried to do some activities like the play gym, tummy time, singing, playing on front of the mirror, reaching chewing and playing with all sorts of toys and sometimes taking a stroll through the neighborhood (which it hasn’t happened in like two weeks haha). Right now I’m trying to add more activities for my 4 month old since he is more able to do so much more and milestones are one after another (if you have any suggestions throw them my way!). Atticus still takes a nap in between feedings, from 30 mins of to almost two hours! He cannot be awake more than 2 hours in between before getting cranky. His second big nap is in the afternoon somewhere in between 2-4pm. During naps I try to do some house work or…. watch Netflix and Hulu haha. To be honest it is always on in the background, and sometimes Atticus likes looking at the moving objects and colors on the TV. We get out of the house most days to have lunch or hangout with friends or run errands. In the evenings I’ve been introducing him to some solids like sweet potatoes and pears. I wait til daddy gets home to start dinner while Justin spends time with him. This gives me so much freedom to just concentrate in cooking. Some days Justin cooks, which I’m so grateful!! From there I start his bed time routine around 7:30-8pm. This I can say is a pretty established routine. Other than giving a bath every other day, we start by putting him in his PJs and then going to my room. He cosleeps with us still and we are planing to do so until he is 6 months old. I put his Snooza movement monitor on his diaper and put him in his sleep sack. Then I read to him, two books most of the time. He loves it so much!! Then, most nights, he gets his last feeding of the day. He falls asleep while eating, or me rocking him and patting his little butt. He is getting really good at falling asleep by himself when I lay him down as well! And I think that’s pretty much it!
2. What is one thing as a mama that makes your heart pitter-patter?
I think the thing that makes me so happy is when he smiles! He is learning how to giggle now and I just die every time he does. Also, I love when he learns to do something new even the smallest of things like putting his now pacifier in his mouth haha. When he falls asleep next to me. He falls asleep so fast when he’s next to me and most times he rubs his face against me to fall asleep. It makes me feel that I am his comfort and security and it shows me how loves he loves his mama!
3. How has being a mother/homemaker challenged you?
The first thing that has been a challenge is time management. It’s like learning all over again how to plan, work, get things done! I have always worked, up until the day before he was born. Along with time management it’s actually getting things done. You probably all know than being at home with a newborn is pretty much being with him all day. In the beginning I struggled even getting something to eat or drink. So thankful I can do that now! Another thing that challenges me is being by myself all day. I was used to being surround by people/coworkers talking, singing and dancing haha. Now I do all this with my baby! Lastly, the every day routineness can be annoying some times. This is why I try to do something different through out the day or just take a walk. Being inside the house for a long time can make you go a little crazy!
4. Do you struggle with routine or do you have a happy reliable routine down?
I don’t have a perfect routine or I have some set of routines for different needs. As I talked about in the first questions, I know we will sleep a couple of hours after he wakes up in the morning and eats, I know when his next feedings are, his nap times and bed time. Still learning how to manage time through out the day. I know planning and making lists helps me so much so I need to start getting on that.
5. What are two things you do for yourself to recharge? Maybe in that coveted “me time” or during nap time?
First, every week I take a few hours to go out and have girl time or just do something by myself while Atticus is with daddy. I feel this is so important because we need to take care of ourselves to be the best mama to our babies. Second, binge watching Netflix or Hulu during some nap times, but for sure when he goes to bed at night. This time I spend with my husband, we are addicted haha. Right now our favorite shows are The Path, Shark Tank, Master Chef and Jimmy Fallon. For me, I’ve been watching ANTM during the day, don’t judge haha. #smize
6. How would you describe your parenting style in 3 words?
Loving, Nurturing and Caring.
7. When do you feel the most joy in your day? Be honest even if it’s once those kiddos are in bed asleep! 😉
Ok yes, I love when he naps during the day haha. It gives me a break and sometimes I join him in those naps ;). I love morning time, he is more chatty and playful during the AM. Going out and have lunch it’s so nice since he is ok with his carseat and so chill and social when we are out.
8. Do you ever feel a sense of guilt being a stay at home mom?
Yes, for sure. Even though I really wanted this, I always have a sense of guilt that I’m not helping my husband bring money into the house. Working and making money was something that gave me a sense of accomplishment and that I can take care of myself. With that, I feel guilty if I want to buy something for myself or do things for myself. I do some things on the side to gain some money. I have an Etsy shop where I sell wall hangings or I sell clothes I don’t use or fit anymore. I also feel guilty that Justin has to go out and be all day working and I get to stay home. I am so grateful for him! I know than being a mom is a full time job. It has been the hardest job I have ever had but it’s so rewarding seeing your baby growing and doing new things every step of the way.
9. Share three activities/places/crafts you currently enjoy with your babes.
Bath time. I love playing with him and he loves just laying there kicking his feed and playing with toys.
Reading books. I read board books. They are short, easy and bright big images. He loves looking and reaching for them.
Singing. I don’t have a great voice, but I love to sing. He loves the Itsy Bitsy Spider so much!
10. Lastly, just for fun, how many babies do you want to have?
When we got married we said we wanted two kids. Since Atticus was born I feel I am more than happy to only have him. To be honest I am scared of doing it all over again, I guess traumatized. It’s nothing he has done, he is the chillest most happy, easy going baby and I am so bless for that! Physically it took a toll on me. We have mentioned adoption, but we are not thinking about that right now. I feel that is something that your heart will call you if you are supposed to do or ready to do it. And you never know, maybe I’ll get over and get pregnant again. But for now, Atticus will be only child.
Hope you enjoyed reading my answers!
